Calligraphy

The range of possible gestures has been tidied up a lot since: the hard sign (ъ) for instance has mostly gone.

I am no expert - old daun Nabokov tells me it is a beautiful language. French, English, Russian - Chinese, Japanese?

I would guess this is Cyrillic. It's not Kanji or Katakana.

Yep - Nabokov seems to have cheated a little by naming the languages of which he was master - French, English and Russian, as Great, and downgrading the rest a little.
